Even though half of us have been sitting at home on furlough for the past few months we’re all still thinking about that next holiday!

As you’ve all seen some of us Brits jumped at the opportunity and many jetted off to Spain asap. But with local lockdowns already being enforced in Leicester this week, I wonder how long it will be before boarders are essentially closed for travellers again…

So, today we’re looking at my top picks for places to easily visit in the UK (under current circumstances)…

Remember all of these places depend on how hospitality sectors can adapt therefore hotels and leisure attractions may be few and far to come by but these are places that are great for the history, culture and sights as well.

1. Isle of Wight

Literally anywhere on the island is a top shout. (My go to is Shanklin just FYI!)

Now the Isle of Wight poses it’s own peaks and pitfalls when we’re talking about going on holiday when there are still some restrictions, one of these includes the Ferry across to get there in the first place. Likelihood is that they will be a reduced service for a while but you should be able to venture over there either within a car or as a socially distanced passenger…

But once you’re there every part of the island gives you a sea-side town vibe that isn’t too over commercialised and banks on local attractions. Luckily for social distancing a large proposition of these are outdoors such as the beach, mini-golf, Shanklin Chine, Blackgang Chine, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Godshill model village, IOW Zoo, The Needles and multiple National Trust sites.

It’s easily to take time out here and live like a local!

2. Edinburgh, Scotland

The only proper city I have featured as we do need to keep our social distance still at this point however, who could resist this view?! The view from ‘Arthurs Seat’ at the top of the hill looks over the whole of Edinburgh and then some! After a short hike you can take it all in…

Alternatively stroll through the cobbled street and do some (takeaway) taste testing of local and not so ‘local’ delicacies. Here’s some things to try:

• Hog Roast Roll @ Oink (seriously amazing!)

• Haggis (of course you’re in Scotland?!)

• Tacos and Quesadillas @ El Cartel

• Scotch Eggs

• Pizza @ Civerinos

• Loaded burgers @ Bread Meats Bread

3. Sennen Cove, Cornwall

To be fair to Cornwall, anywhere in the county would be a great place to stay however if you are looking for a small town secluded enough to have privacy but also a short car ride from other tiny towns this is a good pick.

If you’re missing your lazy days on the beach then you’re in luck here. If english weather is on your side the one of the best features of Sennen Cove is the long sandy beach. Open to the public there is the obvious space for sun worshipers as well as surfing classes/board hire available (in normal seasons).

Not only this but this town is a short walk away from Land’s End, the most southern part of England - A great place for photos!

4. Bath, Somerset

Culture and architecture really shines through in Bath whether the town has its normal crowded streets or if it is a mid-pandemic ghost town.

The main attraction and the towns namesake is the Roman Baths. Here you can learn about history, listen to audio-tours or just admire the landmark for what it has become. Alternatively they offer T’ai Chi on the terrace!

Set in the valley of the River Avon this picturesque world heritage site is great to wander around going from shopping at SouthGate to the Abbey to the Pulteney bridge riverside.

5. New Forest, Hampshire (or any National Park to be honest)

Here is where you really can get back to nature by visiting or even camping in the New Forest! If you’re up for a heath and nature focused get away head over to a protected national park. Here you’ve got the choice of a hotel spa vs. camping but everyone has access to the surrounding forest! Here you can hike, cycle, ride horses, fish, golf and for the daring take part in water-sports!

Now this post talks about some of the attractions that are likely to be some of the first to re-open post-pandemic but please ensure you double check before venturing away on your staycation as local authorities are determining rules within their own counties…

However as I said above all of these are great for a cheeky wander around, take it the sights, architecture and hopefully grab a spot in a beer garden when they open this weekend!
