Introduction to Self-Build

I mean, we’ve all sat there on Sims at some point in our lives and built our dream house right?

With Self-Build it’s not really about the biggest, most extravagant or most expensive house, it’s about creating a space for yourself, by yourself.

Now don’t get me wrong I know there are specialist trades that I would definitely reply on in this situation such as plumbers and electricians however with houses being so expensive and people becoming more demanding knowing what they want many people are turning towards self-build as an option.

Self-Build is the idea that you have a good input of planning, designing and building your home/renovation/extension. Hopefully by you being involved in the process and contributing to actual building works not only do you end up with a home you love but you also gain some knowledge on the way.

One of the best resources and probably the best place to start is the Build IT website. The whole plaform is made to take you through the step-by-step process of how to build your own home as well has having helpful blog posts along the way.

They also offer resources such as 3D design software, advice on materials and understanding the costs/mortgage implications. The site aims to make this an accessible option for the masses rather than just the rich and therefore goes into great detail about how you could approach a self-build.

Some key things to consider when thinking about a Self-Build project:

  1. Plan everything - especially try to predict potential bumps in the road if possible.

  2. Think finances (cash/mortgages/loans).

  3. You are schedule dependant - Changing things will have a major knock-on effect.

  4. Research is key - Learn from others but trust your own research.

  5. Be realistic about what you can take on and what you need to sub-contract.

A great place to see some examples of these types of projects is obviously the very well known Grand Designs. Even though we don’t get a great look into what goes on behind the scenes in these episodes it is a quick way to see the process from buying land to moving into a finished house - not always smooth sailing!

Obviously Self-Build can come in various extremes from those that do it all on their own to those that appreciate the flexibility it offers in terms of design and financially.

If you like a good source to see how it’s really done then head over to Graven Hill The Street, the biggest self-build site in the UK. Grand Designs & Kevin McCloud followed 10 self-builders on their journey to creating their own homes, just like Jack & Hannah who built the home sketched above!

A key thing to remember is that it is a process and a lot of work to work out exactly what you want and essentially then have it come to life! I’m definitely up for it one day - who else wants to put their Sims house designing to the test?
